Michelle takes the long journey of recovery.

Michelle Sidraks was in a car accident on her way to work in July 2000. She was just 23. Her serious injuries left her unable to speak, walk or care for herself. After months of rehabilitation she moved home with her parents.

Australian Home Care provides Michelle with 24-hour support for her ongoing recovery. Her mother Ivana said, “The carers aim to have Michelle do things for herself. They help with dressing, washing and other basic needs, assist with speech therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, and take her shopping and to the movies.”

“Michelle is a very creative person,” Ivana said.

“Before her accident she had completed a fashion design course and painted as a hobby. She was also a terrific cook. Now the Support Workers help Michelle with painting and making greeting cards for family and friends. Michelle also helps the support workers prepare her meals.”

“Michelle has always had a bubbly personality and great sense of humour,” Ivana said. “She is also very stubborn and fiercely determined to never give up.” With the support from Australian Home Care, Michelle can now eat and drink independently. Her left side strength has improved considerably and she can walk for short distances with a frame.

Her speech has also improved and she engages in conversation with family, friends and people she meets when out.

A highlight of Michelle’s recovery was accompanying her mother to visit her grandparents in Italy last year. It was the best experience of Michelle’s life and the mark of a great achievement.
