Respite

If you are the person normally providing day-to-day care for your loved one, these respite services are for you. Respite services can give you a break and provide you with the opportunity to attend to tasks or activities on your own, safe in the knowledge that the person is being well cared for.

Regular respite is an important strategy for maintaining the health and wellbeing of both primary carers and care recipients. Respite services provide the care recipient with enjoyable activities that are appropriate for their age. These services may be provided at home or may involve community outings.

Respite services may be planned for regular intervals or may be provided in response to an emergency or crisis situation. Respite services are designed to meet individual needs and may include care on weekdays, week-ends, overnight or for holidays.

In providing respite care services, AHC will assist by:

  • Providing the primary carer with a break from their caring responsibilities and
  • Providing care ranging from home help to personal care services, that may include:
    • High needs attendant care for people with varying disabilities, including intellectual, cognitive or physical disability
    • Support for care recipients who have challenging behaviours
    • Social support and
    • An activity such as an outing to the theatre, sporting event etc.
